The Day Everything Shifted

The Impossible Christian Life and The Freedom of Galatians 2:20

I think the moment my identity in Christ began to break open for me was when I heard Billy Graham preach a message titled The Impossible Christian Life. This happened when my wife and I were driving in the car and we were listening to Billy Graham on a satellite radio station. In that sermon Billy Graham said, “I can’t live the Christian life!” That sentence stunned me. I remember thinking, If Billy Graham can’t live the Christian life, what chance do I have?

I was saved when I was eight years old. I was baptized. I never doubted my salvation — not once. I knew I was born again, and there was real evidence of God’s work in my life. But living the Christian life? Actually, walking it out? That felt impossible.

I tried. I pushed. I rededicated. I recommitted. I doubled down! But the harder I tried, the more frustrated I became. I was in church, out of church, back in again — but deep down I felt like a fake Christian. Because no matter how much effort I put in, I couldn’t make it work.

And I wasn’t alone. I watched my family, my close friends, people I respected — all of us trying to “live the Christian life.” But the more I paid attention, the more I realized none of us could actually do it. Not consistently. Not victoriously. Not in the way Scripture describes. And then Billy Graham said he couldn’t either!

That was the moment something cracked open in me. It was the beginning of God showing me that the Christian life was never meant to be lived by me — but through me.

The Verse That Explained My Struggle

It was the beginning of Galatians 2:20 becoming real:

“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me…”

Suddenly the frustration made sense. I was trying to live a life that wasn’t mine to live. I was trying to produce what only Christ could produce. I was trying to be the source instead of the vessel.

Billy Graham’s confession didn’t discourage me — it freed me. Because if he couldn’t live the Christian life, and I couldn’t live the Christian life, then maybe the point was that none of us were ever meant to.

Galatians 2:20 isn’t a verse about trying harder. It’s a declaration of a new identity — a new life — a new source.

Christ lives in me.

Christ lives through me.

Christ is my life.

That was the shift. That was the spark. That was the beginning of understanding my identity in Christ.

Why the Christian Life Feels Impossible

Some believers live with a quiet, unspoken frustration:

• “I know I’m saved… but I can’t seem to live this out.”

• “I keep trying, but I keep failing.”

• “Everyone else seems to be doing better than me.”

• “Maybe I’m just not cut out for this.”

But here’s the truth: The Christian life is impossible — for you. It’s not impossible for Christ!  The moment you try to live the Christian life in your own strength; you step outside the design of the gospel. You step back into self‑effort, self‑righteousness, and self‑dependence. Galatians 2:20 is God’s declaration that the “old you” — the you who tries — has been crucified. The life you now live is Christ in you.

Identity in Christ Begins Where Self‑Effort Ends

Your identity in Christ is not discovered through trying harder. It’s discovered through surrender — through accepting the truth that:

• You died with Christ. (Romans 6:6)

• You were raised with Christ. (Colossians 3:1)

• Christ now lives in you. (Galatians 2:20)

• Christ is your life. (Colossians 3:4)

This is not poetry, this is not metaphor, this is spiritual reality.

The Christian life is not you living for Christ. It is Christ living His life through you. That’s the message Billy Graham was pointing to. That’s the message Paul preached. That’s the message that changed my life.

A New Way Forward

If you’ve felt frustrated…

If you’ve felt like a fake…

If you’ve felt like you can’t live the Christian life…

You’re not broken. You’re not failing. You’re not behind.

You’re standing at the doorway of the gospel’s deepest truth:

“It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.”

This is where identity in Christ begins. This is where freedom begins. This is where transformation begins. Not with trying harder — but with living from the One who lives in you.

Closing Prayer

Father,

I come to You with open hands and an open heart. I confess that I have tried to live the Christian life in my own strength, and I have felt the weight of that burden. Today, I surrender that striving. I lay down every attempt to be my own source. Thank You that in Christ, I have been crucified with Him. Thank You that the old life — the life of self‑effort, fear, and frustration — has been put to death. Thank You that the life I now live is Christ living in me.

Lord Jesus, live Your life through me.

Be my strength.

Be my righteousness.

Be my identity.

Be my life.

Teach me to trust Your indwelling presence more than my own performance. Teach me to rest in who You are instead of who I think I should be. Let Galatians 2:20 become more than a verse — let it become my reality. I receive the freedom that comes from knowing it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. And I choose to walk forward in that truth today.

In Jesus Name I Pray, Amen.
